On Stage! Romeo and Juliet. Julius Caesar. Hamlet.

Thanks to SF Shakespeare Festival touring troupe, Shakespeare On Tour, for a free public one-hour performance of some of Shakespeare’s classics.

In 2018, the Shakes treated the Conservatory audience to a touring production of Romeo and Juliet.

In 2016, it was Hamlet, Shakespeare’s tale of a prince whose royal family is disrupted by revenge. Set in the court of Denmark, this murder mystery features Shakespeare’s most famous soliloquy, ‘to be or not to be’ and other familiar text that will be readily recognized.

In 2014, we enjoyed a  performance of Julius Caesar on the Ides of March. An exciting tale of politics and corruption in ancient Rome. Contains Mark Antony’s stirring and powerful “Friends, Romans, countrymen” speech and Brutus’ struggle with his conscience and thrilling swordplay.

These are performances that the Shakes take into the schools! We are grateful to the Shakes for the discount on their performance fee, and to the generosity of the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association for sponsoring this event alongside the Friends and the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department.

The San Francisco Shakespeare Festival is a 32-year old local nonprofit organization whose mission is to share Shakespeare with the community. Best known for Free Shakespeare in the Park and Bay Area Shakespeare Camps, its Shakespeare on Tour program performs in over 150 schools statewide each year.

**It makes the Friends all the more excited about our recent funding for theatrical lighting in the Conservatory. Stay tuned for future evening theater performances.
