Merralls not only wanted to gather up rare earthly plant specimens for his private delight; he also wanted bring celestial wonders closer to home. Look up—way-up—over the west fence of the Conservatory property and you can see the “water-tower” base of what one once Merralls’s Observatory. The Aurora Mandolin Orchestra, originally founded by Bay Area legend Gino Pellegrini in the 1920s, continues under the musical directorship of his wife Jo Pellegrini. The Orchestra of mandolin, mandola, mandocello, guitar string bass, accordion, flute, and percussion has a varied repertoire–featuring music from Russia, Italy, and Spain, and from classical, show tune, opera, and contemporary styles.
